I am such a good God-mother you know. My God children are coming to stay with me in the Yarra Valley in 2 weeks time from Sydney, so I have booked online for us to go cherry picking at Cherryhill Orchards over at Wandin East.
It is a fun, outdoorsy, healthy course of action with them and their parents are thrilled "because going cherry picking will end up in the kids eating fruit for fun (a rarity) "and it isn't something that they can do where they live in the town, so they are actually excited.
We'll take a picnic (my God children eat a lot and often , and lose concentration if I do not feed them frequently) and find a pleasant shady tree to sit under. I am convinced most youngsters think cherries come from shops not trees, so it'll be academic as well as fun. I do not know how many cherries will make it into the basket mind you! There will be purple fingers and stained faces by the end of the day.
I believe a little bit of their excitement about going to the orchards could be attached to the fact that I discussed we will have ice cream when we finish picking. And that the orchard has a dog called Barry, they are particularly looking forward to meeting Barry and eating ice cream. Actually , cherry ice cream will be a welcome reward for all that picking and they handily sell it there at the orchards. Given that, we are taking an esky, (a big one) because reputedly cherries keep better if you cool them as fast as you've picked them and we may just need a spot of room in the esky for a little (or not so little?) take home tub of cherry ice cream too!
There are many farm gates in the Yarra Valley, including Cherries, Berries, and Stonefruit among others.
