The attacks of 09/11 have changed the world as a whole. Not only are we as a nation much more cautious on a daily basis, but the way we travel has become much different than before the terrorist attacks. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has grown in not only employees, but significance in airport security.
The rules for airport safety have become much more stringent and our airports have become much safer for this reason. TSA officials are very serious about their job and they will deny you a flight if there is any type of violation or any suspicion of illegal activities. Due to these restrictions the time for arriving before your flight has changed due to an upgrade in pre-flight security screening. Depending on the size of the airport it is may be necessary to arrive up to two hours before your scheduled flight time. Below is a list of airport security tips to keep you from missing your flight.
Be careful of what you pack: Obviously weapons of any kind are not allowed in your bag, but there are also several other items that may cause you to be pulled to the side by a TSA official. All liquids are not allowed unless they are in small travel sized containers. Also any metal objects could be just cause for a bag check. Don't pack too much in each bag as TSA officials will often randomly pull a bag to the side and empty it out looking for items. Any type of important document should be kept in a folder that you carry with you to avoid any problems. All laptops should be labeled to avoid any confusion with another passenger's computer.
Wear comfortable clothes: Unless you are required to for work, avoid wearing any type of elegant outfit. This includes anything with accessories, rings, pins and any other type of metal that will set off the metal detector. If at all possible wear some type of athletic outfit with shoes that can easily be removed for the security staff.
Stay calm if pulled aside: One of the requirements of the TSA is to pull a certain amount of passengers to the side for a full body sweep with the metal detector and to look through all of their bags. Don't be paranoid that you are being profiled for some reason or another and just realize that this is part of the job for TSA officers.
Keep all valuables in your immediate possession: Carry a backpack or another small bag with everything that is extremely valuable to you on to the plane. Cameras, cell phones, wallets, cash and small electronics can easily be lost or destroyed sometime during your flight. Keep these on you and always be aware of where they are during your trip.
